Candidate Earl Killian

Professional background: Retired founder of Silicon Valley startup.
Education: BS MIT Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
EAA Board position: Treasurer

I have been the EAA treasurer and a director for three years (2005-2007). In 2008 I plan to step down as treasurer, but I am willing to remain on the EAA Board to represent our members and the electric vehicle cause. My interest in the EV cause is derived from the belief that the world must adopt electric propulsion to solve the enormous problems caused by the current fossil economy.

I believe the EAA’s number one priority over the next few years should be to grow its membership so as to be able to support a higher level of service to its members and to better advocate EVs to the general public and public policy makers. Today the EAA is highly dependent upon a very small number of volunteers (who deserve an enormous thank you—you know who you are).

We need to continue to leverage their dedication and commitment, and we need to find ways to attract additional volunteers in areas where we lack badly needed skills. However, in addition, we need to have the resources to supplement the volunteer efforts where volunteers are lacking, and that requires a broader base of support (i.e. membership). Finding a way to increase our membership should therefore be our first priority.

Our second priority should be to increase the effectiveness of the organization at EV advocacy by reaching an audience beyond our own members. Improvements to our website and literature and increasing our lobbying efforts are some of the areas in which we need to grow.

To better implement the above, the EAA board should look at revisions to our bylaws to facilitate the above items, for example to remove any uncertainty that may exist in whether we can hire to supplement volunteer efforts, and also to clarify the extent to which the EAA may engage in public policy making via lobbying and other activities.

Finally, the EAA board needs to be look at ways to streamline its decision making process, which is today somewhat cumbersome and prevents the EAA from being as effective at EV advocacy as is needed to make a difference.

These are the items on which I would seek to contribute as a board member if elected to represent you for another term. Thank you for your consideration.
